Egberto Gismonti’s Dança das Cabeças (recorded 1976) was the first ECM disc from the brilliant Brazilian guitarist and pianist and the first document of Egberto’s collaboration with percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. It was a revelatory blending of sounds, Gismonti’s finely sculpted compositions irradiated by Nana’s Afro-Brazilian rhythm concept and his rainforest sounds. Dança das Cabeças won the German Record Critics Prize as Album of the Year in 1977.

Initially published in March 1977, vinyl is reissued in October 2016 as audiophile pressing taken from the original analog tapes.

    Essential

If you're not familiar with Egberto Gismonti's music, I'd start with this one. Not that it's the most accessible one, but simply because this one will deeply touch you, most likely. It's my favorite one, among the 15-some CDs I got. When I heard this one in my early 20s, it totally changed my musical horizon, and opened doors. This music seems as pure and intuitive as it could be. It's pure emotion, while its musicality and complexity are beyond the reach of most of us fellow musicians. Gismonti and Vasconcelos are going beyond the bondaries of any classification. There is something of the native amazonian forest people in there, there is classical music too, probably due to Gismonti's classical piano training with Nadia Boulanger, and Villa-Lobos influence, there is lots of heart and emotions. I don't know many artists who have been able to reach such heights on both guitar and piano (Ralph Towner is probably the other one). I consider Nana Vasconcelos as the best percussionist of all times. Egberto and Nana are the most amazing duo. My 2 cents.

This album is an ASTOUNDING exploration with unforgettable imagery from two world-class artists. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1947, Egberto Gismonti recorded "Danca Das Cabecas" with Nana Vasconcelos when he was thirty-two years old. He had become fascinated several years earlier with a Brazilian form of popular music known as "choro", which features different types of guitars. To play this, Gismonti had to learn to play the guitar, first on the 6-string classical guitar, and then on the 10-string in 1973. For the next two years, he experimented with various tunings along with exploring new sounds. He was also attracted to Ravel's style of orchestration and chord voicings. Before "Danca", Gismonti had written for and conducted the Orquestra Sinfonica de Rio de Janeiro, as well as recording several albums in Brazil, France, and Germany. One of the most staggeringly, hauntingly beautiful recordings ever made on this planet, "Danca Das Cabecas" made a huge splash when it was released on the great ECM label in 1977. When Chris Albertson, the jazz critic for Stereo Review, first heard it, he offered, "I must have played this album about twenty times since I received it, with a few extra plays for side one, which hasn't yet ceased to dazzle me." I first got the album when I was in college and spent many afternoons and nights in blissful relaxation listening to this gorgeous work of art. Gismonti is not only an incredible guitarist (the first half and final section prove that), but he is a magnificent pianist as well. Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos provides excellent support to Gismonti on "Danca", and even contributes a piece, "Fe Cega Faca Amolada", near the end of the recording. This was Gismonti's debut on ECM records and he performs on 8-string guitar, piano, wood flutes, and vocals, while Vasconcelos is flawless on percussion, berimbau, corpo, and vocals, as well. Gismonti is just AMAZING on guitar and handles the 8-string with a surgeon's precision, along with dazzling runs that extract a wide-ranging scope of emotions. His extended piece on solo piano, "Tango", that originally opened side two of the album, is simply breathtaking & extraordinary; you close your eyes and dream. What a fantastic artist and composer Gismonti is! "Danca" is a rewarding experience for serious open minds & ears that was brilliantly recorded by legendary ECM engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug at Talent Studio, Oslo and produced by ECM founder/owner Manfred Eicher, who yet again has come up with another classic masterpiece on his stellar label that sounds better than ever now on cd. It's a desert island disc for eternity.

    An ECM Label Best!

Danca Das Cabecas shines as one of my top five titles in the ECM catalog along with Jan Garbarek's AFRIC PEPPERBIRD, Steve Tibbetts' EXPLODED VIEW, Ralph Towner's SOLSTICE, and Chick Corea's RETURN TO FOREVER. It's tough leaving out something from John Abercrombie, leader titles from Eberhard Weber and Terje Rypdal, something from Barre Phillips or Steve Reich, and even something from ECM's cash cows, Pat Metheny, Gary Burton, and Keith Jarrett. Heck, I've left out a lot of others that come close to being on my top five list, including another title from Gismonti. So personal favorites prevail. That's my take on this recording. I just love it, all the way down to the ominous last sound on the record left for us by Gismonti and the recording engineer which lifts me high and rapidly soaring through the stratosphere. This music reveals that greatness, although already has been achieved here by Gismonti and Vasconcelos, is possible for everyone else to achieve in whatever we endeavor to do so. Thanks, Egberto and Nana for this, and Manfred for ECM. WOOHOO!
