The list of musical heavyweights doing the honors for George Duke on I Love The Blues, She Heard My Cry (recorded in 1975) is in itself very impressive: Johnny "Guitar" Watson, singer Flora Purim, percussionist Airto Moreira, guitarist Lee Ritenour, drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler and guitarist George Johnson.

George Duke himself said the following about the album: "This was the most diverse record I had recorded to date. It was totally against the rules, but you know, I was young, adamant, and black! I wanted to do it my way . This record was recorded at the end of my tenure with Zappa. "

The recordings are now available in unprecedented sound quality. The original analogue recordings from 1975 form the basis of Christoph Stickel's unobtrusive "refurbishing" which aims to avoid any artistic intervention. You, the valued listener, will be transported back into the sound engineer's chair at the time of recording.

    Groove, Rock and Blues

Posted by John on 8th Mar 2022

Based on the title and cover, you might think it's a blues album. Only the title song with which the album ends can really be classified as blues, G. Duke does not play a keyboard on this song, is only responsible for the vocals, along with Johnny Guitar Watson (Guitar, Vocals, Background Vocals). The album is a colorful mix, not a keyboard/synthesizer overkill. There are instrumentals like “Sister Serene” or “Giant Child within us” but also amazingly rocky songs, “Rokkinrowl” reminiscent of Hendrix, especially the vocals (George Duke!) A welcome surprise for me.
