The Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo is one of the most iconic works in the classical guitar repertoire. Composed in 1939, it was first performed in 1940 by guitarist Regino Sáinz de la Maza. The concerto is renowned for its evocative portrayal of the gardens of the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, blending Spanish musical traditions with classical form.
One notable recording of this masterpiece features Siegfried Behrend as the guitar soloist, accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Reinhard Peters. This 1966 Deutsche Grammophon recording is celebrated for its expressive interpretation and technical precision. Behrend's performance is characterized by its lyrical phrasing and dynamic contrasts, bringing out the emotional depth of Rodrigo's composition.
In addition to the Concierto de Aranjuez, this album includes Rodrigo's Concerto Serenade for Harp and Orchestra, performed by Nicanor Zabaleta on harp. This piece, originally composed for guitar, was adapted for harp at Zabaleta's request and showcases Rodrigo's versatility in instrumentation
