The Work: The Architecture of the Impossible
Recorded between October and December 1956 at the legendary Reeves Sound Studios in New York, Brilliant Corners represents the exact moment when Thelonious Monk’s genius transcended being considered a splendid "exception" to become the very "canon" of modern jazz. Under the enlightened guidance of producer Orrin Keepnews, Monk shaped music so complex, angular, and revolutionary that it severely tested even the extraordinary musicians in the lineup. The complexity of the title track was such that it required over 25 studio takes and a laborious, surgical process of analogue tape editing, meticulously handled by sound engineer Jack Higgins, to finally be completed in the definitive version known to history.
The Hemiolia Experience: A Journey Through Time
Thanks to the meticulous and passionate remastering work of Pietro Benini, this exclusive Master Tape edition does not merely return the album's notes to the listener, but recreates the vibrant atmosphere and physical density of those historic sessions.
Every acoustic element finds its correct three-dimensional placement and extraordinary transparency: from the iconic and dreamlike sound of the celeste played by Monk in "Pannonica", to the intense, almost palpable dialogue between Sonny Rollins’ tenor sax and Max Roach’s drums, leading up to the highly personal, oblique, and viscerale blues structure of "Ba-lue Bolivar Ba-lues-are". Every micro-detail and dynamic nuance is preserved with a tonal depth and emotional resonance that only high-quality magnetic tape can guarantee.
Audiophile Listening Notes
The direct, analogue transfer performed by Hemiolia highlights the extraordinary naturalness of the original medium. The soundstage opens up with astonishing realism: the double bass yields all the warmth of the wood and strings, the horns possess a physical presence entirely free of digital harshness, and the drum cymbals shimmer with extension and dynamic contrast. Monk’s complex polyrhythms cease to be a difficult acoustic enigma, transforming instead into a fluid, powerful, and extraordinarily enjoyable musical flow.
Brilliant Corners in this Hemiolia edition is more than just a recording; it is an intellectual challenge, an absolute sensory pleasure, and a piece of history that comes alive within your playback system.
