Initially designed as a playback unit for audio archives to digitize analog audio material on 1/4“ tape, the Ballfinger M 002 P has now become a high-end solution for audiophiles listening to 1/4” 15 IPS master tape copies thanks to its excellent technical specifications. Because of its compact and understated design, ease of use, and reliability, this device can be integrated into almost any environment. In addition to the standard configuration shown, other playback speeds, equalization, and audio head configurations are also available for use in audio archives. The base for the compact Ballfinger M 002 P comprises the new, super compact tape transport system at just 55 mm high. This consists of a torsionally stiff aluminium plate with fine-milled surfaces, to which all the mechanical components are fastened. The reels are driven by ironless disc motors, which are electronically commutated and fitted with tape tension control on both sides. The machine has a tape path geometry with a completely new layout. The sensors are therefore not located beneath the reels, as is conventional, but rather between them and directly above the head assembly. Despite its modest dimensions of 460 mm x 380 mm, the M 002 P can therefore accommodate reels with a diameter of up to 300 mm. Inserting a tape is also self-explanatory and extremely simple.
