When Julian Edwin Adderley entered the New York jazz scene in 1955, he caused a sensation with his soulful alto saxophone style, which prompted critics to resort to superlatives. Comparisons were immediately drawn with Charlie Parker, who had died that same year. But “Cannonball” was truly something special: with his astonishing technique, mastery of his instrument and passionate playing, Adderley took modern jazz to an even higher level. “Somethin' Else” from 1958 is Cannonball Adderley's only album for Blue Note, and it would probably have gone down in music history simply because of the presence of Miles Davis. But it's more than that: Davis slipped into the rare role of sideman for the album. “Somethin' Else” is now considered a jazz milestone because the chemistry between all the band members – Hank Jones (piano), Sam Jones (bass) and Art Blakey (drums) were also part of the line-up – was just right. Because of the enthusiasm of the performers and the sophisticated arrangements. And not least because of Rudy van Gelder's first-class production!

The interpretations of “Autumn Leaves” and “Love For Sale” are now considered reference recordings of the two titles. In “Autumn Leaves,” Adderley and Davis bring their different approaches to bear and yet sound as if they were cut from the same cloth. Davis' muted trumpet and Adderley's lush alto saxophone merge into a performance that is considered a prime example of expression and musical flow. Blues and romance pour out of their wind instruments. In a group full of giants, it is fascinating to hear how they all subordinate their egos to the common goal.

AudioNautes now pays tribute to this classic with a sonically outstanding, strictly numbered and limited edition UHQCD. The AAD remaster is taken from a copy of the original stereo master.

UHQCD stands for Ultimate High Quality Compact Disc and is a joint development of the Japanese CD replication company Memory-Tech and the Audio Quality CD Company from Hong Kong. Unlike conventional CDs, UHQCDs are not pressed from polycarbonate, but cast from a photopolymer and cured with UV light. Another layer of high-purity polycarbonate is applied to the softer photopolymer for scratch protection. The combination results in significantly reduced reflection of laser light inside the CD and an unmatched precise edge transition between pits and lands of the CD. UHQCDs are 100% compatible with standard CD players. Musically, the result is a sound image strongly reminiscent of analog master tapes.
