Although “Toulouse Street” was the Doobie Brothers' second album, the band liked to refer to it as their actual debut: After their self-titled debut album in 1971, Pat Simmons (vocals, guitar), Tom Johnston (vocals, guitar) and “Little” John Hartman (drums, percussion) admitted that they had rushed the production of that album. “Toulouse Street” was recorded a year later under much more favorable circumstances: the album featured a new bassist, Tiran Porter, and an additional drummer, Michael Hossak, who helped establish the band's characteristic twin-drummer sound. Released by Warner Bros. Records and recorded by Ted Templeman at Warner Bros. Studios in Hollywood and Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco, the album immediately reached number 21 on the Billboard charts, thanks in part to the successful singles “Listen To The Music,” “Jesus Is Just Alright,” and “Rockin' Down The Highway.” “Toulouse Street” is bursting with good vibes and is a catchy mix of blues, rock, R&B, and country from the southern United States, laying the foundation for a career that ultimately led to the Doobie Brothers' induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Lovingly mastered from the original tapes at MoFi's California studio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing, this double LP (45 rpm) presents this absolute classic in audiophile quality: The voices of the band members, the fascinating bass lines, and the unique percussive accents come into their own on the strictly limited and numbered MoFi reissue with thrilling presence, balance, and realism. Ted Templeman's production finally receives the thrilling clarity, liveliness, detail, and spatiality that this magnificent album deserves. The records, appropriately housed in a gatefold sleeve from Stoughton Printing, naturally come with the iconic cover artwork, which was photographed in a former brothel on “Toulouse Street”.
